Simply put, we are an indoor family farm that is preparing to test the limits and boundaries of indoor hydroponic and soil-based growing techniques. Our current goal is to emulate a quarter acre of fertile, high-performing, farmland within a 1,000 sq. ft indoor facility that can feed a family or community with a steadily-available, diverse selection of food. To do this, we are designing and developing growing methods based on microclimate demands. How else can we grow Alpine Strawberries in the Nevada desert?
We are constantly learning about innovative food growing techniques and experimenting with new ways to grow food more efficiently and productively WITHOUT the use of genetic modification or chemical additives. Our modern ways of using atmospherics is one particular highlight. There are so many indoor hydroponic and soil farms here in the US that are doing AMAZING things, but there simply aren't enough of them yet. That's why we're documenting a full 3-year farm build out to serve as a blueprint for those who want to achieve a sustainable farm for themselves.
1. Food Knowledge Should be Open-Source: We are one species. When we learn better ways to grow food for ourselves, why wouldn't we share that with other human beings?
2. Creativity - When traditional methods aren't as effective as they once were, creativity is the answer. This is true in food as well as in life.
3. Everything On Our Planet Begins With Photosynthesis - Energy matters. What we do with it matters even more. Everything we eat starts directly or indirectly with the sun. Love a good steak? Us too. But what does that cow need to eat before it makes it onto your plate? How about that pair of your favorite jeans? That cotton was grown somewhere. You get it.
